Finding water under the vegetable crisper or a puddle in front of the fridge is common, especially in humid months. Most leaks come from the defrost water system and are easy to fix once you find where the water is coming from.
Where defrost water is supposed to go
Fridges collect moisture from the air as frost or condensation. In frost-free and many double-door fridges, this water runs through a small drain hole at the back of the fridge section, down a tube, and into a drain pan near the compressor, where the compressor's heat evaporates it. A leak means something in that path is blocked, broken or tilted.
Common causes of fridge water leakage
1. Blocked defrost drain hole
Food particles, dust or slime block the drain hole. Water then collects under the crisper drawer and can overflow onto the floor. This is the most common cause by far.
2. Frozen drain line
In frost-free fridges, a defrost problem can freeze the drain at the bottom of the freezer. Water then refreezes as ice on the freezer floor, or overflows into the fridge section. See fridge ice build-up.
3. Cracked or displaced drain pan
The drain pan near the compressor can crack, or shift out of place after the fridge is moved, letting water drip on the floor.
4. Fridge not level
Fridges should tilt very slightly backwards so the doors close by themselves and water runs to the drain. A forward tilt sends water to the front.
5. Worn door gasket
A poor seal lets humid air in, creating extra condensation that the drain may not handle, along with sweating on the cabinet edges.
6. Water dispenser or ice-maker line (some models)
Side-by-side fridges with dispensers have water lines and valves that can crack or loosen.
| Where the water is | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Under the crisper drawer inside the fridge | Blocked defrost drain hole |
| Ice on the freezer floor | Frozen drain — possible defrost fault |
| Puddle at the back or under the fridge | Drain pan or drain pipe |
| Puddle at the front | Fridge tilting forward or door seal |
| Near the dispenser | Water line or valve |
How to fix a blocked drain yourself
- Unplug the fridge and remove the crisper drawer.
- Find the drain hole at the back wall, just above where the water collects.
- Flush it gently with a little warm water using a syringe or squeeze bottle until water flows freely.
- Clean the area with mild soapy water and dry it.
- Check that the drain pan at the back is in place and not cracked.
Don't poke too hard
Use a soft pipe cleaner if needed — a sharp wire can damage the drain tube or nearby cooling tubes.
Preventing fridge leaks
- Cover food and wipe up spills so particles don't wash into the drain.
- Clean the drain hole every few months, especially during the monsoon.
- Keep the fridge level with the doors closing on their own.
- Check the door gasket regularly and replace it if it is torn or hard.
