"Your fridge needs gas" is one of the most common things people hear when their refrigerator stops cooling. Sometimes it is true — but a fridge doesn't use up its gas like a cylinder. It is a sealed system, so if the gas is low, it has leaked out somewhere. Refilling without fixing that leak is money wasted.
Here is how to recognise a gas problem, how proper gas charging works, and what to ask before you pay for it.
Signs your fridge may have a gas leak
- The compressor runs almost all the time but the fridge is only slightly cool.
- The freezer no longer forms a light layer of frost, or frost appears only on part of the evaporator.
- Cooling has dropped gradually over days or weeks rather than stopping suddenly.
- The fridge is unusually quiet — no gurgling or hissing sounds of refrigerant flowing.
- Oily marks around copper joints at the back near the compressor.
Not every cooling problem is gas
A faulty thermostat, relay, fan or defrost heater can look exactly like low gas. A good technician tests these first — see our guide to why a fridge stops cooling.
Where fridge gas leaks happen
Common leak points are brazed joints near the compressor and drier filter, a corroded or punctured evaporator in the freezer (often caused by chipping ice with a knife), and the condenser tubing. In some frost-free and modern fridges, part of the tubing runs inside the cabinet walls, which makes leaks there harder to find and repair.
R600a vs R134a: which gas does your fridge use?
| Gas | Where you'll find it | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| R600a (isobutane) | Most newer single-door, double-door and inverter fridges | Eco-friendly but flammable — needs careful handling |
| R134a | Many older fridges | Non-flammable; still common in older models |
The gas type is printed on the rating label. Different gases must never be mixed, and a fridge should be charged only with the gas it was designed for, in the correct quantity.
How proper fridge gas charging is done
- Diagnosis: the technician confirms the thermostat, relay, fans and defrost system are working, and checks for signs of low refrigerant.
- Leak detection: joints, the evaporator and condenser are checked using pressure testing and leak detection methods.
- Leak repair: the leak is brazed or the damaged part is replaced. The drier filter is usually replaced whenever the system is opened.
- Vacuuming: air and moisture are removed with a vacuum pump. Skipping this leads to blockages and poor cooling later.
- Charging: the correct gas is charged in the right quantity for that model.
- Testing: the fridge is run and cooling, running current and frost pattern are checked before the technician leaves.
Avoid a quick top-up
If someone offers to 'just add some gas' without finding the leak, the fridge will usually stop cooling again within weeks. Ask where the leak was and how it was repaired.
What affects the cost of fridge gas charging
- Where the leak is — an exposed joint is quicker to fix than tubing inside the cabinet wall.
- Whether parts such as the drier filter or evaporator need replacing.
- The type and quantity of gas your fridge uses.
- Fridge type — single-door, double-door, side-by-side or commercial.
Because the leak location changes the work involved so much, a fair quote is only possible after inspection.
How to prevent fridge gas leaks
- Never chip ice off the freezer with a knife or sharp tool — punctured evaporators are a very common cause of leaks.
- Move the fridge carefully; bending the tubing at the back can crack joints.
- Keep the back of the fridge dry and clean to slow corrosion, especially in humid or coastal homes.
- Use a stabiliser if your supply fluctuates, to protect the compressor.
