AC 'tonnage' measures cooling capacity, not weight. One ton of cooling is roughly the heat needed to melt a ton of ice in a day. Pick too small and the AC runs flat out without cooling the room; pick too big and you pay more upfront and may get a cold, damp room.
AC tonnage by room size (rough guide)
| Room size | Suggested AC capacity |
|---|---|
| Up to 120 sq ft (e.g. 10×12 ft) | 1 ton |
| 120–180 sq ft (e.g. 12×14 ft) | 1.5 ton |
| 180–250 sq ft (e.g. 14×16 ft) | 2 ton |
| Above 250 sq ft or open-plan halls | 2 ton+ or multiple units — get a site check |
Treat this as a starting point
Room size is only part of the picture. The factors below can move you up a size — especially in Odisha's summer heat.
Factors that increase the tonnage you need
- Top-floor rooms: a sun-baked roof adds a lot of heat — consider going up one size.
- West or south-facing walls and big windows: afternoon sun adds significant heat load.
- More people: each person adds heat; living rooms and offices need more capacity than bedrooms.
- Kitchens or rooms next to them: cooking heat flows into adjacent rooms.
- High ceilings: more air volume to cool.
- Electronics: computers, TVs and servers add heat.
- Poor insulation or frequent door opening: shops and offices lose cool air quickly.
1 ton vs 1.5 ton: which should you buy?
For many Indian bedrooms between 110 and 150 sq ft, this is the real decision. Choose 1 ton for a smaller bedroom on a middle floor with little direct sun. Choose 1.5 ton if the room is on the top floor, faces west, has two or more occupants regularly, or you want faster cooling in peak April–June heat. In Bhubaneswar and coastal Puri, where summer temperatures and humidity run high, 1.5 ton is the more common choice for typical bedrooms.
Inverter or fixed-speed?
Inverter ACs vary compressor speed to match the load, so they hold temperature steadily and usually use less electricity over long running hours. If you run your AC for many hours a day, an inverter model generally makes sense. See our guide to inverter AC problems to know what to watch for.
Installation matters as much as size
A correctly sized AC still cools poorly if it is installed badly — long or kinked pipe runs, an outdoor unit in a hot enclosed space, or skipped vacuuming all reduce capacity. Read our split AC installation checklist before installation day.
