When you call for an AC service, the first question is often: general service or jet service? The two sound similar, but they are very different jobs. An AC jet service washes dirt out of the coil, blower and drain with a pressure pump, while a general service is a lighter clean of the filters and visible surfaces. Picking the wrong one either wastes money or leaves the real dirt inside the unit.
This guide explains what each service includes, how foam and wet cleaning compare with a dry service, and how to decide which your AC needs — based on what our technicians see every week on AC service visits in Bhubaneswar and across Odisha.
What a general AC service includes
A general service, sometimes called a dry service, is a routine clean that keeps a reasonably maintained AC running well between deep cleans. It does not involve washing the inside of the indoor unit with water. A typical general service covers:
- Removing and washing the air filters, then drying and refitting them.
- Wiping the front panel, louvres and the visible face of the coil.
- Brushing or blowing loose dust off the outdoor unit.
- Checking that the drain is flowing and the indoor fan is running smoothly.
- A basic performance check: air outlet temperature, outdoor fan and compressor operation, and any unusual noise.
It is quick, there is little mess, and it suits an AC that was deep cleaned recently and is cooling normally. What it cannot do is remove the fine dust that has passed through the filter and stuck to the wet fins of the evaporator coil and the blades of the blower wheel.
What an AC jet service involves
A jet service, also called wet service or AC deep cleaning, goes inside the unit. The technician uses a portable pressure pump to wash the evaporator coil and blower, and usually the outdoor condenser as well. On a split AC the process normally looks like this:
- Switch off power at the MCB and remove the front panel and filters.
- Cover the PCB, display and wiring with plastic so no water reaches electrical parts.
- Fit a service cover or drain bag under the indoor unit to catch dirty water.
- Apply coil cleaner or foam if the grime is sticky, and let it work for a few minutes.
- Pressure-wash the evaporator coil from top to bottom, following the direction of the fins.
- Clean the blower wheel, which often holds a thick layer of black dust and mould.
- Flush the drain tray and drain pipe so water flows freely.
- Wash the outdoor condenser coil from the inside out to push dirt away from the fins.
- Refit everything, run the AC and check cooling, airflow and drainage before leaving.
The difference is visible. The water coming out of the drain bag after a jet wash is often grey or black, even on an AC whose filters looked clean. That dirt was sitting in the coil and blower, restricting airflow and insulating the coil from the room air.
Foam jet service
An AC foam jet service adds a foaming coil cleaner before the pressure rinse. The foam clings to the fins and loosens oily, sticky deposits — common in rooms near a kitchen, in shops facing busy roads and in units that have not been cleaned for a year or more. For a lightly dusty coil, a plain water jet wash does the job; foam earns its place when the dirt is greasy or caked on.
A quick test before you book
Shine a torch through the filter slot at the coil. If the fins look grey or furry instead of shiny metal, or the blower wheel blades have a black coating, a general service will not fix it — book a jet service.
AC jet service vs general service: side-by-side
| General service (dry) | Jet service (wet / deep cleaning) | |
|---|---|---|
| Filters | Washed and refitted | Washed and refitted |
| Evaporator coil | Surface wipe or brush | Pressure-washed, foam if needed |
| Blower wheel | Not cleaned in depth | Washed blade by blade |
| Drain tray and pipe | Checked for flow | Flushed clean |
| Outdoor condenser | Dry brush or light clean | Washed from inside out |
| Typical time | Shorter visit | Longer visit |
| Best for | Recently deep-cleaned AC, mid-season upkeep | Pre-summer, post-monsoon, poor cooling, smell or leakage |
Signs your AC needs a jet service, not a general service
If any of these sound familiar, a filter clean alone will not be enough:
- Weak cooling even with clean filters and the remote on Cool at 24°C. A dirty coil cannot absorb heat properly — see our guide on AC not cooling for other causes.
- A musty or sour smell when the AC starts. That is mould and bacteria growing on the wet coil and blower.
- Water dripping from the indoor unit. Sludge in the drain tray blocks the outlet and water overflows. Our article on AC water leakage explains this in detail.
- Black specks or water droplets spitting from the vents, a sign of a clogged blower wheel.
- Higher electricity bills with no change in usage, because the compressor runs longer to reach the set temperature.
- The AC has not had a deep clean for a year or more, or it ran heavily through summer.
Why Odisha conditions make deep cleaning more important
Long, hot summers mean many ACs in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack run eight to twelve hours a day for months. Road dust and construction dust pass through the filter in small amounts every hour, and the coil is wet whenever the AC is cooling, so that dust sticks rather than blowing through. Over a season it builds into a mat.
Monsoon humidity adds a second problem: the coil and drain tray stay damp for longer, which encourages mould and slime. Near the coast, in Puri, salty air settles on the outdoor condenser and speeds up corrosion of the fins, so washing the outdoor unit is as important as cleaning the indoor side.
Do not jet-wash an AC yourself
Household pressure washers are too powerful for aluminium fins, and water reaching the PCB or terminal block can cause a short circuit. Jet servicing needs the right pump pressure, covers and drain bag — leave it to a technician.
How often to book each service
A simple pattern works for most homes. Wash the filters yourself every two to three weeks during summer. Book a jet service before the hot season starts and another after the monsoon, when the coil has spent months damp. Fill the gap with a general service if the AC is used heavily. Our guide on how often to service your AC covers different usage patterns in more detail.
Offices, shops and homes with several units benefit from a fixed schedule. An AC AMC plans general and deep services across the year so no unit is missed, and our AC maintenance visits add electrical and performance checks on top of cleaning.
Does an inverter or window AC change anything?
The cleaning principle is the same. On an inverter AC, the technician takes extra care to protect the indoor and outdoor PCBs, since inverter electronics are more sensitive to moisture. A window AC is usually removed from the frame or opened from the front so the coil and fan can be washed without water reaching the compressor wiring.
What to expect when you book
When you book a service with Paras Refrigeration, a technician inspects the indoor and outdoor units first and tells you whether a general service is enough or a jet service is needed, along with the cost, before any work begins. If a fault such as low refrigerant, a weak capacitor or a blocked drain line turns up during cleaning, it is explained separately and parts or refrigerant are quoted separately — nothing is added without your approval.
We work on all major AC brands across Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Khordha, and the first visit within our 50km range is free.
