Moving homes or offices is stressful enough without your AC leaking or not cooling at the new place. Yet many post-move AC problems — gas leaks, water dripping inside, weak cooling — come from a rushed uninstallation or refitting. Here is how it should be done.
Step 1: Proper uninstallation
- Pump-down: with the AC running in cooling mode, the technician closes the liquid valve and collects the refrigerant into the outdoor unit, then closes the gas valve.
- Power off and disconnect: wiring, drain pipe and copper pipes are disconnected; open pipe ends are capped to keep dust and moisture out.
- Remove units and brackets: the indoor unit is lifted off its plate and the outdoor unit removed from its bracket or stand.
Don't cut the pipes without pump-down
Cutting pipes without pumping down releases all the gas and lets moisture into the system — the AC will then need a gas charge and possibly more repairs.
Step 2: Safe transport
- Keep the outdoor unit upright; don't stack heavy boxes on it.
- Protect the indoor unit's coil and plastic body from knocks.
- Keep the remote, mounting plate, screws and any useful copper pipe together.
- Don't bend the capped copper pipes sharply.
Step 3: Reinstallation at the new location
- Plan positions for the indoor and outdoor units, with a short, practical pipe route and good airflow outdoors.
- Mount the indoor unit level with a slight slope towards the drain side.
- Make fresh flare joints and connect the pipes, wiring and drain.
- Vacuum the line to remove air and moisture before opening the outdoor unit's valves.
- Check for leaks at all joints, then run and test cooling.
- Top up gas only if the pressure check shows it's needed.
These are the same standards as a new installation — see our split AC installation checklist for more detail.
Common problems after a careless move
| Problem | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Weak cooling soon after shifting | Gas lost during removal or leaking flare joint |
| Water dripping indoors | Wrong slope or drain pipe running uphill — see AC water leakage |
| Noise or vibration | Loose mounting or outdoor unit not level |
| Compressor problems later | Moisture in the system from skipped vacuuming |
What can add to the cost
- Extra copper pipe if the new route is longer
- A new wall bracket or outdoor stand
- Core-cutting through a thick wall
- Gas top-up, only if pressure is low
