If you live, run a hotel or manage a guest house in Puri, you've probably noticed that ACs don't last as long as they do inland. The culprit is the sea air. Salt particles carried on the breeze settle on outdoor units and, with Odisha's coastal humidity, attack metal parts far faster than in Bhubaneswar or Khordha.
How salt air damages an AC
- Condenser coil and fins: aluminium fins and copper tubes corrode, reducing heat transfer and eventually causing pinhole gas leaks.
- Electrical terminals: salt deposits and moisture cause rust on terminals and contactors, leading to loose connections and tripping.
- Screws, brackets and casing: rust weakens mounting brackets and panels over time.
- PCB and sensors: humid, salty air can affect exposed electronics in the outdoor unit.
Warning signs of corrosion
- White, green or powdery deposits on the coil, fins or copper pipes
- Fins that crumble when touched lightly
- Rust on screws, brackets and the outdoor unit body
- Gradual loss of cooling or repeated need for gas — see AC gas filling
- MCB tripping or the outdoor unit stopping intermittently
How to protect your AC in coastal areas
- Rinse and clean the outdoor coil regularly to remove salt build-up — a technician should do this with controlled water pressure.
- Inspect electrical connections at each service and clean or tighten corroded terminals.
- Position the outdoor unit thoughtfully, away from direct sea-facing wind where possible, with good airflow.
- Use a canopy or shade that protects from direct rain and spray without blocking airflow.
- Consider coastal-coated coils when buying new ACs.
- Treat early rust on brackets and fasteners before it weakens the mounting.
Don't cover the outdoor unit while it runs
Plastic covers trap heat and moisture. Covers are only for long periods when the AC is not in use.
Maintenance for Puri hotels and guest houses
Hotels run many ACs for long hours, often with sea-facing rooms. Planned maintenance — outdoor-unit cleaning, electrical checks and gas-pressure monitoring — prevents peak-season breakdowns when rooms are full. An AMC or CMC contract puts these visits on a schedule.
Paras Refrigeration provides AC service in Puri along with Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Khordha. For a general schedule, read how often you should service your AC.
