An AC rarely fails at a convenient moment. It is usually mid-afternoon in May, the room is filling with heat, and the unit has just gone silent, tripped the MCB or started giving off a strange smell. Before you look for emergency AC repair, a few minutes of the right steps can keep you safe, prevent further damage and help the technician fix the problem faster.
This guide is written the way our technicians would talk you through a breakdown on the phone: what to switch off, what you can check, what you should never try, and exactly what information to send when you book.
First five minutes: safety before anything else
If there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell or water near the electrical parts, treat it as an electrical problem first and an AC problem second.
- Switch off the AC with the remote, then turn off its dedicated MCB or unplug it. If the stabiliser is separate, switch that off too.
- Do not touch the indoor or outdoor unit if you see sparks, smoke or melted plastic, or if the floor around it is wet.
- If there is visible fire, cut power at the main switch and use a CO2 or dry powder extinguisher — never water on an electrical fire. Call the fire service if it does not go out immediately.
- Ventilate the room if there is a burning or chemical smell. Open windows and keep children and pets away.
- Do not keep resetting the MCB. One reset to test is reasonable; if it trips again, leave it off.
Never open the outdoor unit yourself
The outdoor unit contains a capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge even after the power is off, and high-voltage wiring to the compressor. Leave panels, PCBs and refrigerant pipes to a technician.
Common sudden AC breakdowns and what they usually mean
AC stopped working suddenly — no lights, no response
Check that the MCB is on, the plug is seated and the stabiliser display is lit. Change the remote batteries and try the manual button on the indoor unit, if your model has one. If there is still no response, the likely causes are a blown fuse on the PCB, a failed stabiliser, a loose supply connection or a PCB damaged by a voltage surge — all common after storms and power cuts in Odisha.
AC tripping the MCB
An MCB trips to protect the wiring. When it trips as soon as the compressor starts, the usual suspects are a weak capacitor, a compressor drawing too much current, a short in the interconnecting cable or water reaching the outdoor unit's terminals during heavy monsoon rain. An undersized or ageing MCB can also trip under a normal load. Each needs testing with proper instruments, not guesswork.
AC burning smell
A brief dusty smell the first time you run the AC after winter is normal and fades in minutes. A sharp, plastic or electrical burning smell is not. It can come from an overheating fan motor, a loose terminal arcing, melted wire insulation or a failing PCB component. Switch off and do not use the AC until it has been checked.
Loud noise, buzzing or the outdoor unit humming without starting
A humming outdoor unit with no fan movement often points to a failed capacitor or a seized fan motor. Grinding or rattling can mean a loose fan blade, worn bearings or debris inside. Running the AC in this state overheats the compressor, so turn it off.
Water pouring from the indoor unit
Sudden heavy dripping usually means a blocked drain line or an ice-covered coil that is now melting. Switch off, place a bucket and keep water away from sockets. Our guide on AC water leakage explains the causes in detail.
| Symptom | Safe to check yourself | Stop and call a technician if |
|---|---|---|
| No power at all | MCB, plug, stabiliser, remote batteries | Everything is on but the AC is dead |
| MCB trips | Reset once | It trips again |
| Burning smell | Nothing — switch off | Always |
| Smoke or sparks | Nothing — cut main power | Always |
| Humming, fan not spinning | Nothing inside the unit | Always |
| Water dripping indoors | Switch off, protect the floor | Leak continues or water is near wiring |
| Running but not cooling | Filter, mode, set temperature | No change after 30 minutes |
If the AC runs but simply will not cool, that is usually not an emergency — see our guide to AC not cooling for checks you can do while you wait.
What to send on WhatsApp when you book
A clear message saves a lot of back-and-forth and helps the technician arrive with the right parts. Include:
- AC type and brand: split, window, inverter, cassette and so on, plus the ton rating if you know it.
- Age of the AC and when it was last serviced.
- What happened just before it stopped: a power cut, a thunderstorm, a loud bang, water leaking, or it simply would not start.
- Error code or blinking pattern on the indoor display. A photo is better than describing it.
- A short video of the indoor unit running and the outdoor unit (from a safe distance), so the sound and fan movement can be heard and seen.
- Your address and location pin, and whether the outdoor unit is easy to reach or needs a ladder or terrace access.
Our working hours
We work from 8 AM to 10 PM, Monday to Saturday, and aim to respond the same day. For urgent breakdowns, call or WhatsApp rather than waiting for an online booking confirmation. We do not run a 24-hour service, so late-night and Sunday requests are scheduled at the earliest slot.
What happens during an emergency AC repair visit
On arrival, the technician first makes the unit electrically safe, then checks the supply voltage, wiring, MCB and stabiliser before moving to the AC itself. Capacitors, fan motors, sensors and the PCB are tested with a multimeter, and refrigerant pressure is measured if cooling is involved. You are told what is wrong and what it will cost before any work begins — parts and refrigerant are quoted separately.
Common sudden faults such as a failed capacitor, a burnt terminal or a blocked drain are often fixed on the same visit. Inverter PCB faults may need a board repair or replacement; our inverter AC troubleshooting guide explains why. If a leak has drained the gas, the leak is located and fixed before AC gas charging.
We cover Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Khordha from our base in Patia, and the first visit within our 50km range is free.
Preventing the next breakdown
Most sudden failures are not sudden at all. A capacitor weakens over months of voltage fluctuation, a drain line slowly clogs, and terminals loosen with vibration. A few habits reduce the risk:
- Use a stabiliser suited to your AC, especially in areas with frequent low voltage.
- Switch the AC off at the MCB during thunderstorms and long power cuts.
- Get a full service before summer, when the load is highest, and again after the monsoon.
- Act on early warning signs — new noises, a short smell, occasional tripping — instead of waiting for a complete failure.
Regular AC maintenance catches these wear points early. If you have several units at home or in an office, scheduled visits under a contract take the remembering out of it.
